CHICAGO – ORBA, one of Chicago’s largest public accounting firms, has established its Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Committee.
The committee’s goal is to create and foster a working environment that welcomes, promotes and celebrates the diverse ethnic, cultural and social identities of its employees. Leading the group’s initiatives will be co-chairs Sharon Alexander-Jenkins, CPA, Accounting Services Senior Associate, and Carlo Calma, Marketing and Business Development Manager.
“It’s exciting to know that through the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee’s initiatives, we will not only enhance the resources and talent within ORBA, but also impact the public accounting profession at large,” said co-chair Sharon Alexander-Jenkins.
The Committee’s mission statement is:
“ORBA’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee is dedicated to creating an environment where people of all cultures and backgrounds are respected, heard and feel supported — an environment that welcomes the expression of ideas. Through ongoing educational programs, diversity training and community events, we will develop an awareness of and respect for diversity and inclusion.”
“ORBA has grown since I joined the firm five years ago,” said Carlo Calma, Committee Co-Chair. “Seeing the growth in diversity among staff has been exciting to witness and I look forward to helping create more opportunities to cultivate this growth.”
To date, the group has spearheaded internal education campaigns around various national holidays, as well as participated in virtual cooking classes featuring different cultural foods during the holiday season. It plans to branch out to the various schools at which ORBA recruits candidates to work with affinity and ally groups to reach more students of color from more diverse backgrounds.
